SOCIAL MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY

“Especially for young people who are in school, it’s so important for them to be critical thinkers,” she said. “They’re going to have to learn over time about who has a good history of providing accurate information – and who doesn’t. That way, you learn for yourself. The more you go and visit and are on the ground and see things in real life for yourself, or follow people who do, the more you’re going to know and form opinions for yourself.”

While social media has a history of being a conduit for misinformation, it also has a history of documenting important events, from which sound opinions can be formed, she said.

“So I think social media allows you to do that,” Comstock said. “Even if you can’t afford to go on some trip to the Middle East, you can go online and watch and hear from various experts who are on the ground, who will tell you things. And you can hear from somebody who’s on the Palestinian side and somebody who’s on the Israeli side.”

        Facts and Science

          Communication

Facts are crucial for without them we run the risk of turning to unfounded intuitions that could endanger ourselves and others.

We rely on factual information to build trust, confidence, and consensus among one another. We seek medical advice whenever we feel fragile and listen intently to the weather forecasts, as much as we depend on the years of expertise of our farmers in tilling our lands.

The ongoing health pandemic and climate crisis coupled with the scourge of political disinformation and conflict-centered polarization, however, are causing a major pushback in the way we see the value of facts in our daily lives.

We pretty much have an idea of who the main culprits are in this scenario, including but not limited to elected leaders and politicians who amplify the “I can instantly solve everything” rhetoric that is unwarranted and oftentimes against the very idea of a shared consensus.

The Importance of Science Communication

Science communication

The phenomenon of science communication can be studied from different sides of the chain of knowledge transfer: first, from the position of scientists (the "source"); the population (their "recipient"); and the media, science journalists, and communicators working in science organizations and universities (the "transmitters").

Nowadays, interest is growing on both fronts, science becomes an increasingly complex and expensive industry, and on the other, the role of society as a “customer” and “sponsor” of research forms a clear demand for an understandable and accessible description of science.

Therefore, the term “science communication” is now more often used than “popularization”, since the active role of all participants in this process is recognized.

Making science understandable to the public can remove the existing disorientation in society and bring confidence in the future. Therefore, science simply must be open, understandable, and accessible to the masses, rather than hiding behind the doors of offices and university auditoriums. Science needs to be communicated with everyone in an understandable and accessible language.

Many scientists already use accessible methods to communicate. Novelties in medicine and viruses, new materials and environmental problems, digitalization of the environment, space exploration - scientists are already telling people gathered in everyday settings about all this and much more.

    World Communications Day

The communications world: first Areopagus of the modern age

Pope John Paul II (1990) in his encyclical Redemptories mission 37 said: “The world of communications is the first Areopagus of the modern age, unifying humanity and turning it into what is known as a ‘global village’. The communications media have acquired such importance as to be for many the chief means of information and education, of guidance and inspiration for many people in their personal, family and social behavior. In particular, the younger generation is growing up in a world conditioned by the mass media.”

Increasingly aware of the world as a global village and the power of the media as a free market place for philosophies and values, the Church has sought to be in there with its message and to use the media to proclaim the values it sees are beneficial for human development and for the eternal welfare of people.

Analysis and action

Two important documents of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications – Communion et Progression (1971) and Aetat is Novae (1992) have presented an analysis of the world of the communications media and made recommendations for the Church’s action. The Vatican itself has set a headline in updating its use of the full range of the communications media. On a recent visit to Vatican Radio, Pope Benedict was presented with an iPod of the music of Mozart in which he has a particular interest.

The Internet

In 2002, The Pontifical Council for Social Communications produced two documents on the Internet. The first is an analysis of the opportunities and challenges the Internet presents for evangelization and is entitled The Church and Internet. The other sets out an ethical code which should guide its use and is entitled Ethics in Internet.

Pope Benedict XVI’s Message for World Communications Day this year focuses on children and the media. He urges parents to form their children to be discerning in their use of the media. And those working in the media he urges always to promote human dignity. He askes them to refrain from producing materials that lower moral standards, such as those which promote violence or the trivialization of sexuality

CatholicIreland.net

Since 2002 j2.catholicireland.net has provided an internet portal website which gathers all the best of Irish Catholic activity with international links. It provides resources online for prayer, reflection and action with sections that include Spirituality, Faith and Justice, Youth Focus and Culture and the Arts. It also provides a daily news service on www.cinews.ie and builds websites for parishes, dioceses and religious groups through www.getonline.ie

New possibilities and initiatives

Speaking at a recent conference, Bishop Dona Murray of Limerick drew attention to the possibilities the new forms of communication open up for the Church not only to “meet the thirst to belong and to believe”, but also for communication within the Church itself by “building a religious identity… through the interactivity the internet offers”.

With the increase of broadband availability, CatholicIreland.net hopes to continue to reach the traditional Catholics who use its services and find new ways to reach the younger audience that may no longer be attending Church or taking part in traditional home or school prayer, extending its services through pod casts, video clips of “good news” stories and initiatives, and live television streaming.

Live television streaming

According to CEO Tony Bolger, a year-long experiment in live broadcasting of services has just been completed with the Redemptorists of the Cloward Monastery, Belfast on another sister site, www.churchservices.tv.

In June with the canonization of Blessed Charles of Mount Argus, it will launch a second HD broadcast service from the Passionist Monastery of Mount Argus in Dublin.

The live streaming service will then be offered to all cathedrals and churches who wish to join the network.

   Communications industry

Today, customers have more choices and louder voices when it comes to communication service providers. They increasingly view communications service providers as commodities, and the industry is learning that they need to step up to attract and retain customers.

This is according to the latest communications industry report from Salesforce. To help providers understand how customer expectations have evolved and what's required to succeed amidst the changing industry landscape, Salesforce surveyed 500 industry leaders and 6,000 customers for its 2022 Trends in the Communications Industry

Communication providers are investing in network modernization

As more of our personal and professional lives move online, it's imperative that providers meet business and consumer needs for greater bandwidth with faster throughput, lower latency, and improved reliability. This means investments in 5G and fiber connectivity. Customers will pay more for 5G. Communications service providers have had a difficult time communicating the value of 5G and as a result, many customers are still unsure as to the opportunities it provides. Salesforce research found only 44% of respondents were "very familiar" or "extremely familiar" with 5G technology. However, 67% of respondents said they would be willing to pay more for 5G. In addition, research indicates that 5G infrastructure will open B2B opportunities inside and outside of the industry by enticing partnerships and bundling opportunities across multiple industries.
